About the Webinar
Whether you’re processing small batches for on-farm use or scaling up for commercial production, understanding seed equipment is essential for seed quality and efficiency. This session will introduce equipment options and selection, equipment for increasing yield, equipment at various scales of production and mechanization types, and equipment for harvest, cleaning, and storage. Presenters will share hands-on experience, so that participants will gain insight into how to improve seed quality, reduce labor, and develop processes that fit their farm’s size and production goals.
About the Presenters
Kayla Ierlan: Kayla Ierlan is the farm manager at Organic Seed Alliance’s research farm in Chimacum, Washington, with over eight years of professional experience as a commercial seed grower. She also operates Honey Bloom Farm, an organic seed farm, and is passionate about connecting others to seed work and supporting fellow seed growers.
Markael Luterra: Markael Luterra developed the Winnow Wizard, a widely-adaptable precision winnower that has often been described as a "game changer" for small- to medium-scale seed growers and organic seed companies. He currently lives just north of Asheville, North Carolina.
Jeremy Shreve: Jeremy Shreve is co-owner of Swift River Farm, a certified organic small-acreage farm in Salmon, Idaho. We do seed contract grow-outs each year for several seed companies, grow veggies and flowers for market, steward 30+ varieties of garlic, engage in variety trials, on-farm research, community outreach, and are grower-owners of Snake River Seeds.
Sam Scheidt: Sam Scheidt is one of three owner/ operators of Saltwater Seeds, a regionally adapted seed company on the Olympic Peninsula. He has a wide range of experience from orchard work to permaculture systems but organic seed production is his bread and butter.
